Managing Hydration Heat in Mass Concrete: Cooling Pipe Networks at Hoover Dam
To prevent centuries of uncontrolled thermal cracking, engineers at Hoover Dam embedded nearly 600 miles of steel tubing, circulating river and refrigerated water to extract hydration heat before pressure-grouting the contracted blocks into a monolithic arch-gravity barrier.
